Capsule endoscopy is a non-invasive procedure utilizing a small wireless camera within a vitamin-sized capsule to capture images of the digestive tract. As the patient swallows the capsule, it navigates through the digestive system, taking full videos along the way. These videos are transmitted to a recorder worn on a belt around the waist.
Unlike traditional endoscopy methods, capsule endoscopy provides a detailed view inside the whole small intestine, a region challenging to access with other procedures that involve inserting a tube with a camera through the throat or rectum with a risk of anesthesia.
Pros of capsule endoscopy include the ability for veterinarians to gain valuable insights into patients' gastrointestinal health without causing harm, using anesthesia, or requiring recovery time. It enables a comprehensive inspection of the entire gastrointestinal tract, leaving no blind areas unexplored which traditional endoscopy has a limitaton of.
